Pick-and-mix eco features at Barratt Homes new Cambridgeshire development

One of the key attractions of buying a new home is the facility to customise fitted features and, in their latest development, Barratt Homes have taken it one step further. When house-hunters buy the developers new homes in Cambridgeshire off-plan, they can choose from a range of green extras in the same way they’d select kitchens, bathrooms and other interior details.

Cut-aways have been designed in the 'Nightingale Plus’ showhome in Trumpington Meadows, South Cambridgeshire, to show where the green options are. The showhome includes solar panels, rainwater harvesting, eco-friendly garden features, triple-glazing, sustainable flooring, eco-paint, low energy appliances and an innovative energy-saving ventilation system. There are also display boards to demonstrate how these features work. The properties have high environmental qualities as standard but the added features can help a family save around £1,000 a year on energy bills and reduce their home’s carbon footprint by 50%.

The ‘Nightingale Plus’ is one of a pair of semi-detached townhouses on show at Trumpington Meadows. The first, the ‘Nightingale’ is built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 and is conventionally kitted out with showhome furnishings. While next door, the ‘Nightingale Plus’ is also built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3, but has been left unfurnished to illustrate the home’s enhanced sustainability upgrade options with their benefits and cost savings.
These features include solar photo rotatic panels, mechanical ventilation and heat recovery, rainwater harvesting, A+ rated energy efficient appliances and outside homebuyers will find raised garden beds and a composter.
