Pupils from three local primary schools in Kilsyth have helped leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey mark the official start of construction at its Cavalry Park development of new homes in Kilsyth. The children, from Kilsyth, Balmuccoch and St Patrick's Primaries, have buried a commemorative time capsule at Cavalry Park, which they have filled with a variety of items, typical of life in Scotland today.
The pupils fully embraced the project set by the Taylor Wimpey team, and their suggestions really impressed the company as Audrey Ross, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, confirms: "The children have been incredibly diverse in their suggestions of what should be included in our time capsule. Amongst the 15 chosen items there are aerial pictures of Kilsyth, photographs and literature on the Scottish Parliament; as well as a photo and manual for the latest mobile phone.
"There are also pictures of local places and people; popular toys and board games for the present day; plus current music and a variety of items from each school including a school jumper, textbook and a copy of the local Kilsyth Chronicle! It will make the most interesting find in years to come if it's ever discovered."
Teachers at the schools have been thoroughly supportive of Taylor Wimpey's initiative as it embarks on this large scheme of new homes in North Lanarkshire. Diane Brown, Headteacher of Balmalloch Primary School, says: "This has been a fun project for the children to be involved in, and an opportunity for them to mark a little bit of local history in their own town."
Class teacher for St Patrick's Primary, Martin Higney adds: "Our children have enjoyed the opportunity to think about regular items they use in everyday life and how they sum up life in Kilsyth and indeed Scotland. Knowing they've played a part in this significant development in Kilsyth is very exciting."
And Mark Wilson, Principal teacher Kilsyth Primary School, says: "A time capsule is a fun way of communicating from the present day to the future and our children have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this challenge from Taylor Wimpey."
