In the fast-growing commuter town of Portishead near Bristol, several developers have created a diverse collection of new homes around the bustling, cosmopolitan marina - including Crest Nicholson, Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey, Linden Homes and Charles Church.

A traditional deep-water dock was converted to create the new marina, which today is home to hundreds of glistening yachts and cabin cruisers. With shops, restaurants and coffee shops springing up, and a large Waitrose supermarket nearby, the marina is an attractive and lively destination in which to set up home. And Portishead's town centre is also within walking distance, offering yet more shops, wine bars, pubs, and entertainment venues. For commuters, Portishead is located just off junction 19 of the M5 motorway, only 15 miles from Bristol city centre.

Persimmon Homes has created an attractive collection of new apartments in eleven different styles at Portland Green, priced from £139,000 to £200,000. Situated close to the marina, many properties offer far-reaching views of the Severn Estuary, and there's a good range to suit different pockets. The ‘Anchor', for example, is a stylish one bedroom apartment with French doors leading to a garden or balcony, ideal for first-time buyers - and the Government-backed FirstBuy shared equity scheme is available on some apartments. At the top end of the scale, the luxurious ‘Genoa' is a spacious three-bedroom duplex home with its own en suite to the master, plus a study and balcony. All apartments come with allocated off-road parking, and have been designed to fit in well with their surroundings.

Just a few minutes' stroll from the marina in a more tranquil spot, Charles Church has just two remaining two-bedroom apartments at its Priory Walk II development, priced at £160,000 and £165,000. Each property has a spacious living/dining room and separate kitchen, with French doors leading to either a communal garden or a balcony. Just a couple of apartments remain at Linden Homes' The Friary development, just off the marina, close to the town centre, with FirstBuy funding and the company's own shared equity scheme available to eligible buyers.

At Altus, Taylor Wimpey has created a development of one- to four-bedroom homes from £229,995 to £261,995, specifically designed to complement the area's natural beauty. The development has many different styles of properties to choose from, all with a contemporary twist, and many offering fantastic views of the Severn Estuary. Overlooking the coastal path and nature reserve, it's set in a peaceful location away from most of the traffic, ideal for house buyers looking for a quieter place to live near the marina.

Sixty8 at the Marina is the latest phase of Crest Nicholson's Portishead Marina development, situated by the Dockside, blending a collection of sixty one- and two-bedroom apartments and eight exclusive two-bedroom penthouses, with fabulous views from their private balconies. Laura Osborne, Sales Manager for Crest Nicholson, says: "We're delighted to launch the latest phase of our development at Port Marine, which not only offers more value for money than other areas on the outskirts of Bristol, but also encompasses that extra wow factor, which waterside living provides, offering an enviable lifestyle." The one-bedroom apartments at Sixty8 at the Marina are available from £132,000, with two-bedroom apartments starting at £185,000.
