Regenerated Waterside at Cook's Shipyard development by Taylor Wimpey
Taylor Wimpey’s development of new homes in Wivenhoe, near Colchester, has transformed a former industrial site into a waterfront community. The area surrounding Waterside at Cook's Shipyard was once home to shipbuilding, sail-making and gas works, but fell into disrepair and became a target for vandalism and fly-tipping. Now, however, the final stages of construction work are under way at Taylor Wimpey’s new waterfront community of Essex property and public facilities which is due to be completed later this year.
The new homes in Essex have been designed to reflect the architectural traditions of Wivenhoe’s prized Conservation Area, while echoing the maritime heritage of the site.
Alongside the development, Taylor Wimpey has also invested in public facilities at the site, constructing a brand new slipway for leisure boats, renovating the existing wet dock, building a new dinghy park and moorings and creating a new car park, a fisherman’s store and areas of public open space.
Michael O’Leary, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “We’re immensely proud of the work we have done at Cook’s Shipyard, and by the time this flagship development is finally completed at the end of this year, we believe the local community will have changed for the better. Not only have we created a magnificent collection of new homes here, but we have also worked closely with local authorities, community groups and residents to deliver a highly successful regeneration scheme for the benefit of everyone.”
Work at Cook’s Shipyard began in January 2006, with 50% of the overall build timescale made up of preparations for construction, including the dredging of docks, the laying of steel and concrete pile foundations and the installation of infrastructure.
Taylor Wimpey have also contributed to the overall regeneration of the local area by investing £110,000 in the town’s road network and creating a new £10,000 skatepark.
