This category is always hugely competitive, with a number of superb housebuilders entering, and last year's high standards did not disappoint.
Gold - United House Developments
United House Developments was awarded the prestigious Best Medium Housebuilder accolade, following an outstanding year, which also saw the company crowned Housebuilder of the Year.
"What gives United House its edge is that running through the heart of everything it does is good and innovative design," said What House? judges.
The company was complimented for its internal and external finishes, along with its environmentally friendliness and good value for money products.
United House is responsible for award-winning designs across London, with Arundel Square, Islington and Central St Giles, Bloomsbury among its flagships. It has plenty more in the pipeline - over £500m of GDV to be precise. Its price range is extraordinary too, from a £130,000 apartment in a Hounslow regeneration scheme, up to £5.5m at Central St Giles.
Rupert Bates, editorial director of whathouse.co.uk, said: "It is great to see that, even in an extremely tough economic climate, so many housebuilders and developers have sustained their ethos on quality. United House Developments, the residential arm of the United House Group, is one such builder that has not and never will compromise on this."
Silver - Western Homes
Weston Homes once again shone at the What House? Awards, where in 2010 it was voted Housebuilder of the Year.
The company narrowly missed out of a fourth successive gold award for Best Medium Housebuilder, having won it for three years running from 2008-2010.
Weston Homes was commended for its mixed portfolio of in excess of 2,000 new homes in production and planning, including King's Island, Uxbridge, which has received rave reviews.
What House? judges said that Weston's employees, suppliers and business partners are well looked after, with the "loyalty repaid and a recognition that any company is ultimately only as good as its people".
They added: "Weston Homes is equally attentive to its customers and prides itself on its attention to detail throughout its sites and commitment to outstanding, bold and innovative design solutions."
Weston was also commended for its eco-awareness.
"From sourcing materials to waste management, from the energy efficiency of the building envelope through to the energy performance of the goods within, Weston ensures it minimises the environmental impact of its developments, but never forgetting the importance of design and the practicalities of modern-day living."
Bob Weston, chairman and chief executive of Weston Homes, commented: "To win such a prestigious award is a fantastic accolade."
Bronze - CALA Homes
For the second year running, CALA Homes scooped a coveted bronze award in the UK's Best Medium Housebuilder category, repeating its success in the 2010 awards, reflecting the company's continued commitment to providing the highest quality homes.
Judges highlighted: "A passionate workforce delivering a premium product to a customer who is king," as a major contributor for CALA Homes' success in 2011.
Their citation read: "If the customer is always right then CALA is doing things very right. Once again the company, building across England and Scotland, topped the bill in the HBF Customer Satisfaction ratings. Getting it right at every level is integral to the business success."
CALA also scored highly for its health and safety record, its rebranding and campaign-led marketing and investment in the CALA website which has significantly increased online sales. The new Signature range, now shaping most of the company's Scottish developments was also singled out for praise, with the judges commenting on all the company's homes:
"CALA has produced some lovely fresh designs, tailored to its wide variety of locations."
Alan Brown, chief executive of CALA Homes, said: "Repeating our success by winning this top award for the second year running shows that CALA Homes continues to set new benchmarks for customer care and for quality products, against a background of excellent financial performance and growing sales.
"I am immensely proud of both our homes and the teams of dedicated people within CALA that have worked together to make such success happen.
"It is especially pleasing to be recognised once again at these prestigious UK awards as the challenging times continue for the nation's housing industry - and it shows that genuine quality will shine through whatever the market conditions."
