The Docklands, which once looked like it was going to fail, has now been heralded as a great success. Businesses have flocked to the area and with them, a surge of professionals seeking homes in nearby Tower Hamlets. The borough stretches from Tower Bridge, Wapping and Limehouse along the Thames dockside in the south, to Bow, Stepney and Bethnal Green in the north.


Two- and three-bedroom terrace properties along with new and ex-social housing are common in Bethnal Green, however larger properties are hard to find. Bow features plenty of Georgian housing stock, much of which has been refurbished, although untouched properties are rare. Two- and three-bedroom terraces and refurbished social housing features in Bow. Stepney, Whitechapel and Wapping, the heart of London’s traditional East End, offers former social housing, Victorian and Edwardian properties and even some new-build apartments.

Bow is one area of Tower Hamlets, which has already seen some regeneration. One of the most recent projects, Bow Quarter created 700 properties in the area. The regeneration looks set to continue. New-build properties and refurbishments of social housing will be joined by conversions of factories, warehouses and church halls. This has placed Bow on the map, as the next hotspot of the borough. Stepney and Whitechapel are also undergoing regeneration. As the Docklands has bought an influx of homebuyers, properties are being refurbished and renovated to suit the market.

Transport links in Tower Hamlets

Major roads = A11, A102, and A1205

The Docklands Light Railway offers access from the Docklands at Blackwall, Shadwell, Limehouse and East India into south east London at Lewisham and central London at Bank. The borough is also well served by London Underground. Bethnal Green and Mile End are situated on the Central line. Mile End also offers access to the District and Hammersmith & City lines alongside a number of other stations including Stepney Green and Whitechapel. Whitechapel is also located on the East London line. Rail services run from Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath to London Liverpool Street. Alternatively bus routes run across the borough to central London.


In the pipeline: The Crossrail scheme is a high-speed rail service that would take passengers to the West End and central London, running from Paddington to Whitechapel. Although the project has been given the go-ahead, the exact stops are still being decided and the scheme doesn’t look set to be completed until 2013.
