After scooping two golds, a silver and a brozne at the What House? Awards 2012, Urban Splash are in celebratory mood. For those who have been following the developer it comes as no surprise that their innovative approach has been recognised - the developer has continued to take risks with cutting edge, affordable, residential property during a time when it's easier to play it safe. Actor James Nesbitt hosted the Awards, which saw CALA Homes take home the biggest prize in new homes - the What House? Housebuilder of the Year 2012.
There were winners from every corner of the UK among the 20 other categories honoured, in front of nearly 1,400 senior property industry figures at the most prestigious event in the housebuilding calendar.
Having been involved with the What House? Awards as a judge since 2007, I have been taken aback by some of the schemes that I have visited. During that time I have viewed some extraordinary broad ranging developments, featuring new homes designed for first time buyers, professionals, couples and families.
While I only get to see a fraction of the awards entries in person during the judging process, one of the perks of my role as editor of whathouse.co.uk is that I get to go out and about around the country all year round, so I get to see an awful lot of new homes at other times. I'm always pleased when I see a scheme I've really liked on site earlier in the year is entered for an award, and even more so if the judges decide to recognise its excellence.

This category recognises that some of the greatest achievements in residential construction are not reached alone. The success of these new homes scheme at last year's What House? Awards is a testament to the hard work of all those involved, which is at the heart of a successful partnership.
United House, awarded What House? Housebuilder of the Year 2011, also won gold for Best Exterior along with Londonewcastle for Arundel Square in Islington, London, N7. Gladedale Capital and Berkeley Homes both walked away with joint silver awards, while Barratt Homes was awarded bronze.
