Love it or hate it, second-home ownership is on the rise in Britain. But it’s not all about jetting off to a sunshine bolthole.
According to the government’s Survey of English Housing, almost 250,000 householders in England own a second home - in England. More than half of these are used as holiday or retirement homes.
The demand for holiday homes in this country has given rise to the purpose-built holiday park – it makes sense, after all. But before you imagine ugly high-rises, killing both the countryside and your bank balance in one fell swoop, think again.
Green and affordable
The Hollicars Holiday Park, part of the historic Escrick Park Estate in North Yorkshire, is proof that second-home ownership doesn’t have to be bad for the environment nor for your pocket.
Set in 250 acres of deciduous and evergreen woodland, the park is a conservation area and all its facilities have been designed and built in harmony with the natural environment. The Hollicars’ green credentials are so good that the park has won the David Bellamy Conservation Award.
The park comprises 70 luxury timber-clad lodges. A two-bedroom, fully furnished lodge starts at £100,000 - less likely to break the bank than a bricks-and-mortar equivalent.
