New homes in Birmingham to reach new heights
A leading architectural firm has drawn up designs for a scheme which, if approved, would become Birmingham’s tallest building.
Aedas Architects submitted the plans for the 200.5 metres tall mixed-use development – including a range of brand new homes – on Monday, according to a report by The Architects’ Journal.
If plans are approved, the Regal Tower, located on the corner of Broad Street and Sheepcote Street, would be built by new home developer, Regal Property Group.
Initial plans for the £125 million, 56-storey mixed-use skyscraper, includes a new hotel, retail space, 256 new flats – all of which would be serviced, banqueting suite, and three storeys of new penthouses set within the ‘Crown’ at the top of the development.
The Regal Tower, located on the corner of Broad Street and Sheepcote Street, would measure 50cm taller than the proposed VTP200 tourist tower, which developer, VTP Global, have also submitted plans to build, as part of the city’s £6 billion Eastside redevelopment.
Roger Holbeche of Regal Property Group commented: “The Big City Plan sets out a need for more tall buildings and we are proud to be responding to this with the Regal Tower application.
“We are keen to ensure that the public have the opportunity to enjoy the building, which is why we have included the sky bar as well as the winter garden on the 53rd floor, which will be open to the public on certain days of the year.”
If plans for the project are approved, construction work could get underway by the end of 2010. Completion has been earmarked for 2013.
Leader of Birmingham City Council, Mike Whitby, added: “It’s tremendously encouraging to see that investors have kept their faith in the city despite current uncertainties. It’s a positive sign that a stream of development is continuing to take place in Birmingham, shaping the city ready for the future.”
