Mayor Boris plans new homes in London
The mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced plans to construct over 32,000new homes on Greater London Authority (GLA) owned land which is currently underused.
Johnson has requested an appraisal of land owned by the GLA and associated public bodies, including Transport for London, the London Development Agency and the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, in order to identify suitable land plots to build brand new homes on.
Under the proposal, the GLA would act as a major shareholder in any new home developments constructed on its land, with proceeds ploughed back into affordable housing in London.
Mayor Johnson commented: “The GLA is sitting on hundreds of potential housing sites that could be used to build more than 32,000 new homes.
“We need innovative ideas that will reshape how we invest, build and deliver affordable homes in London and in return I’ll put my land where my mouth is and show London is leading the way on delivering affordable homes for 2011 and beyond.”
Johnson also said that the LDA is exploring the idea of opening a housing firm in the capital, in the hope of reducing the cost of acquiring land for the construction of future new home build schemes.
